Gin
In recent years, gin has been gaining in popularity mainly due to the drink that has become almost indispensable at summer picnics and during evenings by the sea – gin and tonic. The clear spirit, which is not usually aged, is nothing new, as it has long been part of our culture and belongs to the category of strong traditional spirits. It contains at least 38% and up to 55% alcohol.
Gin or the Dutch courage
Gin evolved from genever, a traditional spirit typical of Belgium and the Netherlands.
Juniper berries, an indispensable ingredient of every gin, were once used for medicinal purposes, so genever was also first used to relieve stomach problems (similar to our juniper brandy). Its users, however, quickly realised that genever could also be drunk just to cheer up their afternoons, and the spirit earned the name “the Dutch courage”. It got its name because of the Dutch soldiers who liked to take a sip of it before going into battle, as genever calmed them down and relaxed them.
The Gin Craze – have you heard of it?
The beginnings of gin production date all the way back to the Middle Ages, as its aforementioned predecessor genever was already produced in the 13th century.
Its rise to prominence in the 17th century was due to William III, who was a great lover of this spirit. The popularity of gin continued to rise in the 18th century, when it reached such a level that its mass consumption caused an increase in taxes and duties on imported spirits and a relaxation of laws on the management and regulation of gin production on home soil. As a result, many new distilleries were created, and gin became extremely affordable, cheap and popular.
Can gin really be compared to juniper brandy?
Are you among those who (erroneously) think that juniper brandy and gin are one and the same drink? We have to disappoint you – they are not. Let’s see why.
● Production method: Juniper brandy is obtained by distillation of fermented juniper berries, and gin by distillation of already distilled neutral alcohol to which various aromatic botanicals are added.
● Juniper quantity: To make one litre of gin, between 25 and 40 g of juniper berries are needed, while the production of one litre of juniper brandy requires a colossal 6 to 8 kg of juniper berries. Significant difference, wouldn’t you agree?
● Ingredients: Only juniper berries are used to make juniper brandy. Gin, on the other hand, can be added an unlimited amount of aromatic botanicals, the most popular of which are citrus peels, coriander, cardamom, angelica root, liquorice and various flowers.
The right spices for the best gin and tonic
Gin and tonic, which has become almost as indispensable as sunscreen and inflatable pool floats in recent summers, requires a few extra ingredients in addition to quality gin and tonic. You probably already know juniper berries and regularly add them to this drink, refreshing as a pleasant breeze – but you can also use the following additions:
● Coriander seeds
● Sprig of rosemary
● Lemon or orange peel
● Cardamom
● Flowers (such as dried rose petals)
● Various peppercorns (pink are very popular)
● Liquorice
And don’t forget the ice! Lots of ice!
Common questions
At what temperature is gin and tonic served?
If there is an alcoholic beverage that truly requires the glass and the drink to be properly chilled, it is a gin and tonic. For a good gin and tonic, it is important to first chill the glass and fill it with ice, as this will keep the bubbles in the drink for longer.
What kind of tonic is suitable for gin and tonic?
It is extremely important that we choose a quality gin as well as an excellent tonic. Gin is best paired with the exquisite Franklin and Sons tonics, which are made specially for the preparation of gin and tonics. Since the tonic constitutes the largest ratio of the drink, it is vital that it creates a harmony with the chosen gin.
Which glasses are used for gin and tonic?
The glasses most suitable for gin and tonic are rounded and wide, tapering towards the top (balloon-shaped). They should be stemmed so that the warmth of the hand does not warm the drink during drinking.
