When we think of a quality spirit, we often think of expensive crystal glasses, charming elderly gentlemen sitting in leather armchairs with a pipe in their hand, while elegant restaurant tables or bookshelves full of precious volumes of renowned authors abound behind them.
And when we hear the word whisky, we think of a spirit that we all seem to know all about (if not all, then at least a lot). You have probably already heard that the traditional basic ingredient of whisky is barley. But did you also know that whisky can be made from other grains, such as corn, rye and wheat?
What is whisky and what whiskey?
The word whisky (or whiskey) comes from the Gaelic term uisge/uisce beatha, which means “water of life”. There is, however, a difference between the first and second spelling:
The term whisky without the letter e is used for beverages produced in Scotland, Japan, Wales and Canada.
The term whiskey, on the other hand, is used for beverages distilled in Ireland. In the United States, “whisky” has been prescribed as the official spelling since 1968, although the addition of the letter e is permitted due to tradition.
Is true whisky really made exclusively from barley?
Originally, the base for whisky was only barley, but the end of the 19th century also saw the rise in popularity of the so-called blended whisky, in which barley-based whisky (or malt whisky) is mixed with whisky made from other grains (or grain whisky). The predominant type of whisky sold today is the blended whisky, which is a combination of barley whisky and whisky from other grains.
Is older really always better?
The barrels in which the whisky ages are very important. Barrels made of American or French oak are supposed to impart the best flavour. Barrels in which another spirit has previously matured, such as rum, are also commonly used.
During maturation in barrels, whisky acquires its specific flavour and golden colour. It can be left in the barrels for different lengths of time, but the rule that more is better does not really apply. Nevertheless, there is a law in Scotland that whisky must be aged for at least three years, and traditionally whisky is left in barrels for at least eight years.
A bottle of whisky is often marked with the number 8, 10, 12 or 15. These indicate how many years the whisky has matured in the barrel. Since freshly distilled whisky can contain as much as 70 percent alcohol, it is diluted slightly before pouring into barrels, and then once again at the end of the maturation process, before bottling. Whisky today has an average of 40 percent alcohol.
Do you know the meaning of special labels on whisky bottles?
If you’ve ever taken the time to read the content that has been carefully printed on bottles while looking for a better-quality whisky, you may have noticed terms like “wood finish”, “private bottling” and the like. If up until now you weren’t quite sure what they mean, here is a simplified explanation:
● AGE NUMBER – age
● SINGLE CASK – whisky from a single barrel
● WOOD FINISH – origin of barrels
● CASK STRENGTH – only water is added in the end, no other ingredients
● NON-CHILL FILTERED – unfiltered whisky
● PRIVATE BOTTLING – the customer buys the whole barrel, which is then bottled and equipped with a personalised label
● INDEPENDENT BOTTLER – the producer buys barrels of whisky and bottles his own blends
Common questions
How to serve whisky?
Serve whisky at 15–18 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is too high, add an ice cube, or, if you do not want to dilute it, chill the glass beforehand in the refrigerator or freezer.
Which glasses are best for whisky?
Use a glencairn glass, a tulip-shaped glass or a so-called snifter. It is important that the glass is tapered towards the top, so that the aromas of the whisky will not dissipate too quickly.
